Senior System Engineer (m/f/d)
The Position
Do you share our passion for improving healthcare by developing and operating robust, innovative IT solutions that support Clinical Development?
Then join our product team within IT RDM Medicine. Together with your colleagues, you will contribute to the development and end-to-end operation of modern software solutions that address real business needs in a regulated environment.
This role is designed for a technically strong, hands-on professional who enjoys building solutions while also taking responsibility for their delivery, stability, and continuous improvement. The focus is on combining engineering work with ownership across the solution lifecycle, in close collaboration with the team and stakeholders.
You will join an international and intercultural team of highly skilled IT professionals based in Germany and Spain. We are moving away from rigid role definitions and are looking for people with a multi-learning mindset who are curious, pragmatic, and comfortable contributing across technical and operational topics.
Tasks & responsibilities
- In this role, you will deliver and operate innovative software solutions in close collaboration with the business community and other IT units, using modern technologies and standard IT platforms to build sustainable, production-ready solutions.
- As a technical partner, you will act as a key contact for internal customers (e.g. Medicine), translate business demands into pragmatic and scalable IT solutions, and support capability development and roadmap planning in close partnership with the business Capability Owner.
- Working end to end, you will take responsibility for IT systems across their entire lifecycle, including development, releases, operation, continuous improvement, and operational readiness.
- Furthermore, you will contribute to IT system lead-related activities, such as release coordination, change preparation, and incident handling, ensuring stable and reliable services.
- As part of a product team, you will build solutions from early prototyping to fully productive and scalable services, actively participating in agile delivery activities and supporting team coordination as a shared responsibility.
- In addition, you will contribute to architectural discussions and solution design in alignment with the overall IT architecture and IT strategy, and collaborate with or guide external developers where applicable.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related or equivalent discipline, combined with proven experience gained over several years in software development using modern programming languages and backend technologies (e.g. Python).
- Proven experience with cloud-native and container-based solutions, including hands-on development and delivery experience using platforms such as Red Hat OpenShift, AWS EKS, or AWS Fargate, as well as solid knowledge of API design and development.
- Strong experience in CI/CD environments and container platforms, including tools such as Jenkins, Git, Jira, and Bitbucket, ensuring reliable delivery and operation of IT solutions.
- Good exposure to AWS services and infrastructure concepts, such as Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK), AWS Lambda, API Gateway, storage solutions (S3, EFS, FSx), and databases (RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB).
- Experience in IT consultancy, automation, or data science, with a track record of delivering IT solutions from prototyping to productive operation at scale; experience in the pharmaceutical industry or regulated environments (GxP) is a plus.
- Strong willingness to learn and grow beyond a single role, paired with excellent communication and teamwork skills in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
- professional-level English communication skills.
