Job Description:

Master Thesis (d/f/m): Validation of Decoupled Testing of Serial ISS Payloads for FLUMIAS

You are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of Airbus. Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the department Assembly, Integration and Test Friedrichshafen (TSMGF) as a Master Thesis student (d/f/m)!

  • Location: Friedrichshafen
  • Start: As soon as possible
  • Duration: 6 months

FLUMIAS (Fluorescence Microscopic Analysis in Space) is a high-end microscope designed for live-cell research under variable gravity. A key feature of the mission is its modularity: the main facility remains on the ISS, while individual Experiment Blocks (EBs), containing biological samples, life support systems, and thermal control, are frequently exchanged. Because every EB is unique, each requires individual testing and configuration before launch. To manage this, Airbus uses dedicated standalone test stands to decouple component-level verification from the main facility schedule.

Your location

At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.

Your benefits

  • Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 35-hour week (flexitime).
  • Traveling overseas or within Germany (team events) is possible after consultation and agreement from the department.
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Ensure the test stand hardware correctly mimics the main facility. You’ll be responsible for verifying that the physical thermal interfaces produce flight-representative data. Additionally you are responsible to transfer the qualification of the first model into an acceptance approach for the serial production of flight models.
  • Test Execution: Execute thermal test campaigns on the component level test stand. Optionally, the test campaigns can be extended to Flight Model facility level.
  • Cross-check the test data. You will compare telemetry from the standalone test stands with measurements from the Engineering Model at DLR Cologne and the Flight Model.
  • Process Optimization: Identify discrepancies and develop strategies to mitigate testing bottlenecks for future missions.
  • Participate in test campaigns at the DLR MUSC in Cologne to directly compare results between the test stand and the engineering model of the integrated facility.
  • Document your results in the form of standardized test reports and non conformance reports where necessary.

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Enrolled Full-time Student (d/f/m) in Engineering, Physics or a related field.
  • Strong system-analytical thinking and the ability to bridge the gap between technical requirements and strategic process design.
  • Hands-on mentality for laboratory testing and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of data processing tools (Python/MATLAB) is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and communicate complex engineering trade-offs within supplier constraints and across different sites.
  • High awareness of quality standards and safety protocols. Prior experience in Cleanroom environments (ISO 5/8) is a significant advantage.
