Job Description:

As the primary technical lead for LH2 feed systems, you will bridge the gap between energy storage and active propulsion/power. Your expertise will ensure the reliable delivery of liquid hydrogen from the liquid hydrogen tank to the main power plant as a consumer unit, focusing on the high-performance demands of cryogenic pumping as well as thermal and control stability.

Your Location

You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.

Your Benefits

  • Attractive salary and special payments.
  • 30 days paid vacation and extra days-off for special occasions.
  • Excellent upskilling opportunities and great international, group-wide development prospects.
  • Special benefits: employer-funded pension, employee stock options, discounted car leasing, special conditions for insurances, transportation subsidy, and employee benefits at cooperating companies.
  • On-site facilities: Kindergarten close to the site, medical officer for check-ups and health-related services, canteen, and cafeteria.
  • Compatibility of family & work: job sharing, part-time models, flexible working hours, and individual timeout.
  • Diverse environment: working with more than 140 nationalities, where every voice is heard.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Pumping & Fluid Distribution: Act as the lead engineer for LH2 pumps, valves, and active feed lines; represent these competencies in technical reviews with Airbus departments, Tier-1 suppliers, and research partners.
  • System Architecture & Interface Design: Define the architecture of the active feed chain, including submerged or external LH2 pumps, mass flow controls, and phase change; analyze and design critical interfaces between the cryogenic tank and the downstream power plant.
  • Cryogenic Component Engineering: Specify requirements for high-speed cryogenic rotating machinery and flow control components, focusing on minimizing heat leak while maximizing suction performance (NPSH) and durability.
  • Safety & Pressure Management: Develop safety and fail-safe concepts for pressurized feed lines, defining procedures for "cool-down" cycles, inerting, and emergency shut-off.
  • V&V and Cryogenic Testing: Lead the Validation & Verification (V&V) strategy, including designing cryogenic test rigs to validate pump performance, seal integrity, and flow accuracy under flight-representative conditions.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Academic Background: Master’s degree or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related thermofluids discipline.
  • Technical Expertise: Proven experience in the design and integration of cryogenic pumps (centrifugal or piston) and fluid control components.
  • Cryogenic Knowledge: Deep understanding of cryogenic heat transfer, vacuum insulation, management of "Boil-Off Gas" (BOG), leakage management and two-phase flow physics.
  • Software & Tools: Proficiency in system simulation tools such as Python, Amesim, or MATLAB/Simulink for transient fluid analysis.
  • Standards: Knowledge of aerospace standards (e.g., ARP4754, DO-160, DO-178, DO-254).
