The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a Position as

Praedoc (f/m/x) Phonetics 

 (30h/week)

The position is assigned to the Phonetics Cluster of the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI). ARI is an interdisciplinary research institution. It undertakes top-level research on acoustics in phonetics, hearing, biology, numerics, and mathematics. The close interaction of the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergistic effects of multidisciplinary research. ARI employs ~50 academic, technical and administrative staff.  

The successful candidate will develop a PhD project on a topic at the interface of phonetics and psycholinguistics within the research areas of the group leader, Eva Reinisch. Possible topics include the integration of different types of acoustic information during speech perception, or the adaptation to different acoustic environments in speech perception and production over different time-scales. Interdisciplinary projects relating to the other clusters at the institute are possible.

Your Tasks

  • Design and execution of speech perception and/or production experiments.
  • Communication of results in scientific journal publications and at scientific meetings.
  • Participation in public outreach initiatives of the institute.

Your Profile

Required

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to Phonetics or Psycholinguistics.
  • Good knowledge of acoustic phonetics.
  • Experience in experimental work on speech perception and/or production. 
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of written and oral English.

Beneficial

  • Programming and statistics skills (e.g., in R).
  • At least a basic knowledge of German.

Flexibility, ability to learn fast and the ability to work independently as well as in a scientific team.

  • An annual gross salary according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) of € 39.855,69. 

This position is limited to 3 years. The desired starting date is June 1st 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will enroll in the PhD program of the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behavior and Neuroscience at the University of Vienna.
