The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a Position as

Postdoc (f/m/x) in experimental exotic atom research

for an initial period of 2-3 years.

A Postdoc position is available from March 2026 to play a key role in the MBI Exotic Atoms group, focussing on antihydrogen formation within the ASACUSA experiment at CERN-AD/ELENA and experiments with a slow positron beam installed at MBI Vienna. The candidate is expected to spend some of his/her time at CERN.

Your Tasks

  • You will participate in running experiments on antihydrogen formation and hyperfine spectroscopy at CERN and positron beams at MBI and build up and execute new experiments at MBI, together with a group of graduate students and senior colleagues currently involved in the experiments
  • supervision of students

Your Profile

  • Ph.D.  in experimental physics (preferably subatomic physics or a related field).
  • Familiarity with the plasma aspects of trapped charged particles, positron and Positronium physics as well as with atomic scattering physics.
  •  Familiar with some of the following techniques: UHV and cryogenic techniques, Penning traps, detectors for charged particles like MCPs. 
  • Software skills are an asset, for instance for experiment control (LabView), simulation (Comsol or CST, Geant4) and data analysis (root, Python, C++)
