Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for Electronic Control Units and Automotive High Performance Computers (m/f/d)

Our software can already be found in Volkswagen ID. models and will soon power Audi and Porsche vehicles with the E3 1.2 platform in 2024.

Who we are

We serve as the primary hub for mechanical engineering expertise, encompassing areas such as design, packaging, FEA, CFD, NVH, within CARIAD. As an international team of proficient and driven engineers, our collective ambition is to foster growth and bring innovation to the automotive industry.
Our emphasis lies in steering in-house development projects, notably in the realms of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and central compute Electronic Control Units (ECUs). Our commitment extends beyond conceptualization, as we actively transform our designs into tangible components integrated into production vehicles.
Throughout the design process, we maintain seamless communication with a diverse spectrum of stakeholders, collaborating closely with electrical engineers, contract manufacturers, purchasing teams, value engineering specialists, and project management professionals.


  • Mechanical design and packaging of electronic control units (ECUs) and automotive high performance computers to meet system and vehicle requirements, while optimizing for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability, and serviceability
  • Create 3D models, assembly drawings, and component drawings of product designs. Select materials for all mechanical parts within ECUs.
  • Create tolerance stack-up analysis on ECU assembly's components and its vehicle interface
  • Use analysis techniques such as the D-FMEA to identify and assess design and manufacturing risks. Develop plans to validate the robustness of product designs (DV, PV).
  • Work closely with simulation and testing team to ensure short development cycles
  • Evaluate the feasibility and cost savings impact of ideas through cost estimating, technical and manufacturing feasibility assessments


  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering; or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
  • Extensive experience in product development of complex electro-mechanical systems (e.g. in automotive, computing, military, avionics)
  • Outstanding design, packaging, and 3D modeling skills - we use CATIA and consider candidates with strong capabilities in any other CAD package
  • Vast experience designing and working with manufacturers to create parts and assemblies using high volume manufacturing processes such as die casting, stamping, injection molding, friction stir welding, and brazing
  • Good understanding of assembly development, metrology, and GD&T for mass production as well as PCBs/PCBAs and thermal solutions such as thermal interface material
  • Experience with FEA software, or thermal modeling software is a plus - we currently use Ansys' toolchain and are always looking to use the best tool for the job
  • Fluent English language skills (both verbal and written), German is considered a plus
